Rally for the Shubert May 4

Up to $2 Million for the Shubert Possible in Current Bonding Bill

Rally for the Shubert – Monday, May 4 @ 2 PM
with Mayor Rybak, County Commission Peter McLaughlin,
WCCO Anchor Don Shelby and Others

Join us on Monday, May 4 at 2 PM as we rally for the Minnesota Shubert Center.  The rally will be led by Mayor R.T. Rybak and County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin and emceed by WCCO Anchor Don Shelby.  It will include brief performances by the hip hop crew The Battle Cats and ARENA Dances, and perhaps a few surprises.

Why rally?  Because we are so close to breaking ground.  More than $36 million has been raised.  If we can raise an additional $2 – 2.5 million, we can start construction this summer, spurring $25 million of spending, creating 101 construction-related jobs, and creating 38 permanent jobs.  As our first flagship center for dance, the Minnesota Shubert Center will also allow our diverse and talented dance community to reach new heights.

There will be lots of energy at the rally, but in case you need a little more – free coffee and cookies for your afternoon break.  We hope to see you there, and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

What: A rally for the Minnesota Shubert Center

Why: Because Everybody Dances

Where: In the lot between the Shubert Theater and the Hennepin Center for the Arts, on Hennepin Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets

When: From 2 – 2:45 PM

Up to $2 Million for the Shubert Possible in Current Bonding Bill – BUT EMAILS TO ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED

The Minnesota Legislature is currently reconciling two different versions of the 2009 Bonding Bill.  The Senate version of the bill includes $2 million for the Minnesota Shubert Center.  The House version includes $0.  We are asking our supporters to contact their elected officials at the state level, encouraging them to include $2 million for the Minnesota Shubert Center in the final, reconciled bill.

We know everyone’s time is limited.  If you can just send three emails, these would be the most critical:

1. Rep. Alice Hausman, Chair of the House Capital Investment Committee (i.e., bonding): rep.alice.hausman@house.mn or (651) 296-3824

2. Speaker of the House Margaret Kelliher: rep.margaret.kelliher@house.mn or (651) 296-0171

3. Gov. Tim Pawlenty: tim.pawlenty@state.mn.us or (651) 296-3391

When contacting your elected officials, consider these key points:

1. The Minnesota Shubert Center is “shovel-ready” project, with broad financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations, the City of Minneapolis, the State of Minnesota, and the U.S. federal government.

2. With an additional investment of $2 – 2.5 million, we can leverage $25 million of spending, create 101 construction-related jobs, and 38 permanent jobs.

3. The Minnesota Shubert Center’s award-winning distance learning program provides FREE arts education opportunities to schools across Minnesota.

4. More than 40 non-profit organizations will use the Minnesota Shubert Center for affordable space to work, teach, rehearse and/or perform.  Collectively, the Shubert’s partner organizations employ more than 1,200 people, and their patrons and audiences stretch across the state.
